    Teaching design for Book 1 Module 3 Unit 1

    Foshan No. 3 Middle School

     

    • Title:

    There are thirty students in my class.

    • Material Analysis:

      This unit is about introducing a school or a class by using “there be” structure. This unit is a expansion of the last Module which is focus on the positions and the demonstrative pronouns.

      • Student profile:

        They are intermediate students. In the previous unit, students are able to use some of prepositions like “on the left/ right, in front of/ next to” to talk about the positions and the four demonstrative pronouns “this/that/ those/ these”. They know how to use the structure about “How many …are there” in the starter, but they don’t know how to use the negative form and the general question about there be. They are junior students and they are interested in the class and the school.

        • Objectives:

         by the end of the class, students will be able to

          1. Listen and understand the topic of the classroom.

          2. Use “there be” structure and its negative form, general sentences to talk about one’s classroom.

          3. Read the conversation aloud on class and classroom and identifying places from description.

          4. To know about different culture about school and make them know more and love more their class.

          • Target language and skills to emphasize:

            Make a prediction before listening and listen for the detail information

            • The"i+1"in this lesson:

              1) “i” : Students have known the prepositions like “on the left/ right, in front of/ next to ” to talk about the positions and they can use how many… are there to describe the objectives and answer with the numbers.

              2) “1”: what’s new: the don’t know how to use “Is/Are there any…”

              学生有可能不了解“there be”结构表示存在,再使用中可能和表示拥有的“have/has”混淆

              先在图片中,后在实际教室中让学生明白物品的实际存在即使学生错用,老师也只需要口头纠正,不需要详细解析,以免增加学生负担。

              学生不懂得使用someany

              老师和程度较好的学生多做示范,让其余学生模仿,在潜移默化中明白some一般用于陈述句,any 用于疑问句和否定句。

              • Teaching Procedures

                Step 1. Lead in: ask the students to look at a picture and find out the numbers in the picture.

                Step 2. Show students the rules of reading out numbers. What's the rules?

                Step 3. Hand out some cards with numbers and do some tasks. What tasks and what for?

                Step 4. Teach the new words and the new structure, then ask them to use the new structure to talk about the things in classroom.

                Step 5. Use the new words to describe the three pictures in the book.

                Step 6. Listening and choose the right picture.

                Step 7 listen and read

                1) pre-listening: tell them that they are going to listen to a conversation between Daming and Linda about their classrooms. Ask them to predict what’s in Linda’s classroom.

                2) play the recording and check the words they hear.

                3) play the recording again and fill in the table.

                Step 7 reading : ask the students to read the dialogue and do the role play.

                Step 8 complete a picture about Linda’s classroom.

                Step 9. Speaking

                1) modeling: talk about an ideal classroom of myself.

                2) Ask students to draw a picture of their ideal classroom.

                3) do an interview and talk about what their friends’ ideal classrooms are like.
