The White-Flag Dolphin
The white-flag dolphin, also called as "giant panda in water," is one of the rarest dolphins in the world. They only live in Yangtze River, the longest river in China. It is also called the Yangtze River Dolphin or Baiji Dolphin. They are very different from the other dolphins in the world. They only live in deep of freshwater. They are timid and are easily frightened. Therefore they live far away from boats and cruises(游艇). The only possibility(可能性) is when the dolphin comes to the surface to breathe.
The dolphins prey on (捕食)fish for food. They have about 130 sharp teeth. They usually feed in the morning or in the evening while swimming in the shallow water. Dolphins are on the top of the food chain, thus they have no natural enemies. The male grows up to 2.5 meters long and the female 2.3 meters and weighs between 100 and 150 kg. It has lungs(肺). They have very poor eyesight but have a very developed and sensitive sonar system. (声纳系统)
Long time ago, People and dolphins lived in harmony. It was reported that dolphins even could save people’s lives. However, people polluted the river and hunted for dolphins. Now Chances of seeing a Yangtze River Dolphin is rather slim(很小). In 2002, there were less than 50 Baiji Dolphins in the world. They are one of the most endangered animals in the world. The situation is more serious than the giant panda.
